History

The creation of the Medal of Honor can be traced back to the American Civil War in 1861. Before this, from the period of the Independence War to the Mexican-American War in the 1840s, the United States had established medals to commend the bravery of soldiers, but most of them were temporary. It will be repealed after the end. After the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, Senator James Grimes of Iowa suggested that the commander-in-chief of the U.S. Army, General Winfield Scott, establish a permanent honorary commendation for bravery and meritorious deeds. A prominent soldier, but Scott did not accept it. However, this suggestion was accepted by the U.S. Navy. President Lincoln signed a decree on December 21, 1861, establishing the Navy Medal of Valor, granting "the performance of bravery in the current war is different from Ordinary naval officers, sailors, and marines". Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles commissioned the Philadelphia Mint to design and manufacture this military medal.
